The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics – a state that existed from 1922 to 1991 in Europe and Asia. Union of Soviet Socialist occupied 1 / 6 of the habitable land and had the largest area in the country in the world, which in 1917 occupied the Russian Empire without Finland, part of the Polish Kingdom and some other areas (land Kars, now Turkey), but with Galicia, Transcarpathia , part of Prussia, Northern Bucovina, South Sakhalin and the Kuriles.
According to the Constitution of 1977, the Soviet Union was hailed as a united multi-ethnic union and socialist State.
After the Second World War, the Soviet Union had land borders with Afghanistan, Hungary, Iran, China, the DPRK (September 9, 1948), Mongolia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Finland, Czechoslovakia and the only sea with the U.S., Japan and Sweden.
USSR was established on Dec. 30, 1922 by combining the RSFSR, the USSR, BSSR and ZSFSR.
Consisted of the republics (in different years ranging from 4 to 16) of the Constitution are sovereign states for each union republic retained the right freely to secede from the Union. The Federal Republic was entitled to enter into relations with foreign states, conclude treaties with them and exchange diplomatic and consular representatives, to participate in the activities of international organizations. Among the 50 countries of the founders of the UN along with the USSR and its two allies of the republic: Belorussian SSR and the USSR.
